Who should attend?
Anyone who has attended either the RLSS Emergency Response or NRSTC courses or hold a basic first aid certificate, and want to expand their knowledge and skills in aquatic spinal injury management. It is also an ideal course for qualified lifeguards to refresh their spinal injury management skills and will count towards the 20 hours of approved training needed for re-qualification.
What will they learn?
Students gain skills and knowledge to deal with aquatic spinal injuries. They learn diverse rescue techniques specific to spinal injuries and how to prevent further injuries. They will gain confidence to use these skills through practical application on themselves and in the pool.

• Specifics for rescue breathing
• Action for vomit for spinal
• Spinal rescue techniques in shallow and deep water
• Manual recovery to poolside
• Application of stiff-neck collar
• Recovery to poolside with spine board
• Spinal injury stabilisation
Course duration
6 hours (1 day)
Assessment
Continuous assessment during the course; candidates must show competence in applying skills promptly, safely and effectively. There is no written exam.
Certificate and Validity
Internationally recognised Spinal Injury Management Certificate of Attendance from Royal Life Saving Society UK.
Entry requirement
Participants should have Basic English skills and good swimming abilities. They must be able to swim 25m continuously on the front and on the back. Minimum age: 16 years.
