Who should attend?
Anyone who supervises activities in an open water environment. This course should be considered essential for activities in open water where no lifeguard is available or where the nature of the activities could pose a higher risk of drowning or injuries.
What will they learn?
Students gain basic skills and knowledge to deal with emergencies that may occur at an open water area. They will gain confidence to use these skills through practical application on themselves, manikins and in the sea.

• Risk assessments and control measures
• Standard Operating Procedures
• Currents and weather conditions
• Casualty identification
• Principles and methods of rescue
• First Aid
• Land based and wading rescue
• Use of rescue equipment
• Contact rescue
• Rescue and treatment of an unconscious casualty
• Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (adults and children)
• Use of pocket mask
• 2-operator-CPR
• Spinal Cord Injury Management
Course duration
3 days in total, 8 hours per day; 3rd day is assessment day.
Assessment
Continuous assessment during the course plus a final independent assessment (practical and oral) where candidates must show competence in applying skills promptly, safely and effectively. There is no written exam.
Certificate and Validity
Internationally recognised Emergency Response Certificate (Activity Supervisors) from Royal Life Saving Society UK, valid for 2 years.
Entry requirement
Participants should have Basic English skills and good swimming abilities in open water. They must be able to swim continuously 50m on their front and 50m on their back without any support. They should provide evidence of open water experience, e.g. Open water lifesaving/lifeguard award or endorsement from the outdoor activity organiser.
